FELIX DE ROOY - APOCALYPSE

Since 1989, I have collaborated with Felix de Rooy (felixderooy.art) on numerous projects, both in the Netherlands and abroad. At the end of 2021, Felix de Rooy receives the fantastic news that a solo exhibition of his work will take place at the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, led by curators Charl Landvreugd and Claire van Els.

Felix specifically asked if Atelier Argos (René Wissink) could handle the design of the exhibition, and by mid-2022 it is decided that this idea will become a reality. From then on, a lot of work is being done to develop a concept that will bring the exhibition to life.

In collaboration with Charl Landvreugd, Claire van Els and Barbara Martijn, Felix de Rooy establishes the final collection for the exhibition. The main themes of the exhibition are sexuality, religion and intercultural and intertemporal connections.

These three themes are further divided into sub-themes, and based on this division, Atelier Argos sets to work on the initial concept. The original idea is to photograph Felix's entire house and integrate these images into the exhibition, with each room forming its own space. However, due to high costs, a new concept is requested in which a more powerful statement can be made.

The second concept consists of individual walls placed in a tight rhythm in the main room. These walls are centrally provided with colors that match the respective themes: dark red for sexuality, night blue for spirituality and gold for cross-culture and cross-time.

This arrangement creates smaller spaces that are still connected and clearly indicate which theme one is within. In the center of the room, three large decks are drawn to serve as catwalks for the many sculptures. In addition, 7 large blow-ups of saints, created in collaboration with Kirk Claes, play a prominent role in the exhibition.

Above the four walls and decking, canvases are hung that also tie in with the themes. The three canvases in the center show the three main themes through portraits of Felix. The four canvases in the corners of the exhibition contain images from film and theater, as a connection to and delineation of the exhibition.

In the adjacent small room there is an archive room. The walls are colored dark ochre with large white and two black areas covered with wallpaper. These areas are the same size as the walls in the large room, 3 by 3 meters. The wallpaper shows the titles of all the plays at the section on theater, all the films at the film section and all the exhibitions since 1989 at the two walls with the overview of the exhibitions. The two black walls are dedicated to "White over Black," on which the title is displayed in all the languages of the countries where the exhibition has been.

In the center of the room are some screens on a table, equipped with headphones, for a project by The Black Archives. Hantarex screens are placed along the edges near the various themes. To conclude, a reading table is present with the most important books on Felix.

With this concept, Felix de Rooy and Atelier Argos hope to create a powerful and connected experience for visitors to the exhibition, doing justice to the themes of sexuality, religion and cross-culture and cross-time.

Sinds 1989 werk ik samen met Felix de Rooy (felixderooy.art) aan talloze projecten, zowel in Nederland als daarbuiten. Eind 2021 krijgt Felix de Rooy het fantastische nieuws dat er een solotentoonstelling van zijn werk zal plaatsvinden in het Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, onder leiding van de curatoren Charl Landvreugd en Claire van Els.

Felix heeft specifiek gevraagd of Atelier Argos (René Wissink) de vormgeving van de tentoonstelling kan verzorgen, en medio 2022 wordt besloten dat dit idee werkelijkheid zal worden. Vanaf dat moment wordt er hard gewerkt aan het ontwikkelen van een concept dat de expositie tot leven zal brengen.

In samenwerking met Charl Landvreugd, Claire van Els en Barbara Martijn stelt Felix de Rooy de definitieve collectie voor de expositie vast. De hoofdthema's van de tentoonstelling zijn: seksualiteit, religie en interculturele en intertemporele verbindingen.

Deze drie thema's worden verder onderverdeeld in subthema's, en op basis van deze indeling gaat Atelier Argos aan de slag met het eerste concept. Het oorspronkelijke idee is om het hele huis van Felix te fotograferen en deze beelden in de expositie te integreren, waarbij elke kamer een eigen ruimte vormt. Echter, vanwege de hoge kosten wordt er gevraagd om een nieuw concept waarin een krachtiger statement gemaakt kan worden.

Het tweede concept bestaat uit losse wanden die in een strak ritme geplaatst worden in de grote zaal. Deze wanden worden centraal voorzien van kleuren die aansluiten bij de respectievelijke thema's: donkerrood voor seksualiteit, nachtblauw voor spiritualiteit en goud voor cross-culture en cross-time.

Door deze opstelling ontstaan er kleinere ruimtes die toch met elkaar in verbinding staan en duidelijk aangeven binnen welk thema men zich bevindt. In het midden van de zaal zijn drie grote vlonders getekend die dienen als catwalks voor de vele sculpturen. Daarnaast spelen 7 grote blow-ups van heiligen, gemaakt in samenwerking met Kirk Claes, een prominente rol in de expositie.

Boven de vier wanden en de vlonders worden doeken opgehangen die eveneens aansluiten bij de thema's. De drie doeken in het centrum tonen via portretten van Felix de drie hoofdthema's. De vier doeken in de hoeken van de tentoonstelling bevatten beelden uit film en theater, als een verbinding met en afbakening van de expositie.

In de aangrenzende kleine zaal bevindt zich een archiefruimte. De wanden zijn donker oker gekleurd en voorzien van grote witte en twee zwarte vlakken, die bedekt zijn met behang. Deze vlakken hebben dezelfde afmeting als de wanden in de grote zaal, namelijk 3 bij 3 meter. Op het behang zijn de titels van alle theaterstukken bij het gedeelte over theater, alle films bij het filmgedeelte en alle tentoonstellingen sinds 1989 bij de twee wanden met het overzicht van de tentoonstellingen, te vinden. De twee zwarte wanden zijn speciaal bestemd voor "Wit over Zwart", waarop de titel in alle talen van de landen waar de expositie is geweest, wordt weergegeven.

In het midden van de ruimte staan enkele schermen op een tafel, voorzien van koptelefoons, voor een project van The Black Archives. Langs de randen bij de verschillende thema's worden Hantarex schermen geplaatst. Als afsluiting is er een leestafel aanwezig met de belangrijkste boeken over Felix.

Met dit concept hopen Felix de Rooy en Atelier Argos een krachtige en verbonden ervaring te creëren voor de bezoekers van de tentoonstelling, waarbij de thema's seksualiteit, religie en cross-culture en cross-time tot hun recht komen.
